DECC Case Study

Comgroup Australia has been awarded a major supply contract for 2,400 portable and mobile radio terminals for the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change Parks and Wildlife Group. The terminals are part of the P&WG Radio System Upgrade Project which will be implemented under the guidance of NSW Department of Commerce, Projects Services Branch. The project will provide P&WG with a range of new radio communications facilities and services with a platform to meet future requirements that cannot be addressed by their current aging system.

Comgroup Australia Sales and Marketing Director Mr Neil Walsh said he was delighted that D.E.C.C. has chosen a local supplier for such a large and exciting project, and that it vindicated the company’s decision to invest in local research and development of radio terminal technology. “Many of our customers need a supplier who can adapt standard radio technology to suit their specific needs. Our local engineering allows us to be flexible in the product functionality we can deliver and to provide high levels of support” he said.

Case Study - SAMS5000

Melbourne-based HVP is Australia’s largest private timber plantation company, managing around 245,000 hectares of land across Victoria – annually supplying some three million tonnes of softwood (pine) and three hundred thousand tonnes of hardwood (eucalypt) to sawmillers, panel producers and pulp and paper mills in Australia and overseas.
A major risk during the summer months is bushfire, and as a member of the CFA Forest Industry Brigades, HVP staffs and manages a fleet of private fire fighting vehicles which work in conjunction with State fire fighting agencies during fire events.

An accident during the Tolmie-Tatong fires in 2007 left two employees with serious neck injuries after a burning tree fell on their vehicle’s roof. This prompted HVP to turn to Comgroup for a radio based solution to operate in remote forest areas as well as population centres.

A SAMS5000 vehicle location and tracking system with data duress facility was deployed over the Telstra VHF SMR trunked radio network. This allows drivers up to 200 metres from their vehicles to summon help and have their position automatically displayed on an electronic map.
This solution has provided major improvements in employee occupational health and safety, as well as helping HVP better manage their mobile assets and resources during a fire event.

tyco & ComGroup

ComGroup Australia and Tyco Electronics brought communications equipment to aid recovery in the disaster zone in Sichuan Province.

The industry giant, Tyco Electronics, has since the beginning of 2007 worked with ComGroup in their North American and Asian markets. Thanks to Tyco Electronics generous donation, 510 of their P3300 and M3300 radios are now programmed and in service in some of the worst hit areas of the earthquake disaster zone in Sichuan Province. The donation has been much appreciated by government officials and ComGroup would like to thank Tyco Electronics for their efforts in making a difference. Jay Murray, Tyco Electronics Director of Asia-Pacific Sales for Wireless Systems said, “With more than 30,000 employees here in China, we were pleased to be able respond quickly to help in this disaster. The cooperation and support of our friends at ComGroup played a big part in helping us make it happen.”

FEP

Field Encryption Programmer

The Field Encryption Programmer (FEP) is TMC Radio’s latest P25 key management tool, supplementing the P25 Key Manager Software (KMS) application to provide easy field update of encryption keys while still maintaining the highest level of security.
The FEP and KMS support both P25 DES and 256 bit AES encryption types.
Keys generated on the KMS can be quickly and easily downloaded to the FEP with the press of a single hot key. The FEP can then be deployed in the field by an operator to update or change the key tables of the P25 SRM9000 and SRP9100 series radios.
Encryption of all data ensures that keys cannot be read or altered when downloaded to the FEP plus there is the added security of PIN protection of the application itself.

Xmode

Multiple modes on one platform

A new version of Simoco two-way radios has been released. Designed to meet the needs of global enterprise users, Xmode provides multiple analogue and digital operating modes from a single radio platform.

Simoco Xmode terminals, SRP9100 portables and SRM9000 mobiles, support P25 trunked and conventional operating modes in addition to the existing PMR and MPT1327 operating modes. AES and DES secure digital encryption, GPS tracking and mobile data are also supported in both trunked and conventional digital modes. Field performance is further enhanced by an intelligent voting algorithm, which ensures optimum receiver performance in low signal areas.

The Xmode is a cost-effective terminal for users, who are considering a move to P25 in the future as the various operating modes can be added on step by step without replacing the terminals. This flexibility has been put to great use by Public Safety organizations in Australia and overseas who need to temporarily extend the footprint of their existing wide-area radio networks to a local-area system stemming from their vehicle.

ComGroup Australia gets the vote in Papua New Guinea

March 2007: ComGroup Australia has been awarded a contract for a major upgrade to the Royal Papua New Guinea Police Constabulary two-way radio system. The technology will be used to support command and control operations for the upcoming national elections.
The project involves the supply of hand held, mobile and portable radios with an extensive network of fixed, mobile and portable repeater stations. A package of training and support services has also been supplied to ensure a strong level of technical independence.
The system has been designed for rapid deployment into provincial areas and regions as required by the operational needs. Director of Communications Chief Inspector Mike D Corren stated that: “We are keen to ensure the elections will be conducted in a timely and proper manner. This technology will ensure we are equipped to conduct our operations as efficiently and effectively as possible”.
Field tests in the chosen frequency bands have recorded excellent performance in very rugged and diverse terrain. Communications Engineer Mr Win Jipris was involved in the selection process for a technology partner. “We searched extensively for a supplier who could meet our technology requirements and be able to provide the training and support that we need to gain our own in-house skills. The Simoco radios supplied by ComGroup have proven themselves to operate in our very demanding conditions while being extremely flexible with many programmable options that we can bring on line as required. We also found the ability to convert mobiles to cross-band or in-band vehicle repeaters as being very useful”, he said.
All terminal equipment has been supplied as “P25 Ready” so that the digital operation on the APCO P25 digital standard can be deployed in future.
Comgroup Australia Chief Executive Officer Mr Tom Jonhammar has followed the project closely since its inception. “We are delighted that RPNGC have chosen us for such an important project. The recent field trials have vindicated their decision and we are looking forward to working closely with them to support their future needs”.
